Two distinguished professors from the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) were officially inaugurated on May 18. The professors, Prof. Dr. Idah Zuhroh, M.M., and Prof. Dr. Widayat, M.M., have further strengthened the quality of education at the White Campus. Interestingly, their scientific orations not only focused on economics and marketing management but also on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
For example, Idah discussed the extension of the role of Islamic banking in promoting the achievement of SDGs: a multilayer approach and strengthening regulations based on intersectoral collaboration. According to her, the role of Islamic banking in promoting sustainable development is increasingly important, as it can be a key player in mobilizing funds for projects that support the SDGs.
“This shows that the financial sector, especially Islamic banking, plays an important role in making a tangible contribution to global development goals and the SDGs,” she added.

She also discussed the concept of multilayered Islamic finance. This concept is inspired by the anatomy of a building, consisting of the foundation, pedestal, and pillars. The foundation comprises mature regulatory frameworks, strong commitment, and adequate financial infrastructure. These three foundational elements support the five main pillars, including product and financing diversification, human resource capacity development, risk management and sharia compliance, capital adequacy, and Islamic finance literacy and adoption.
Strengthening intersectoral policies implemented through open innovation-based collaboration is also important. Cross-sector cooperation and open innovation are key to enhancing the intermediary role of Islamic banking, which in turn helps improve the achievement of the SDGs.
On the other hand, Widayat examined ways to build a balanced and sustainable lifestyle to achieve better holistic well-being. He explained that issues related to the green economy, green marketing, responsible production, and consumption, which are pillars of the SDGs, present interesting challenges. Therefore, creating a balanced and sustainable lifestyle is very important. According to him, the well-being and happiness of society are not only determined by income levels and other economic measures. Social and environmental conditions determine well-being and happiness.

“Improving well-being can be achieved not only by increasing income but also by enhancing the quality of the environment where people work and live. Even social problems, such as unhealthy lifestyles, chaotic transformation issues, and poor physical environment conditions strongly contribute to well-being. This includes air pollution, environmental contamination, waste problems, and others," he added.
To create a good social environment and form the habit of practicing good deeds and avoiding b ad deeds, integrated da'wah (preaching) can be implemented. Social marketing can also be conducted using an approach that adopts the principles of conventional marketing, which are more relevant to social and environmental problems. This is especially true compared to traditional approaches such as fines, punishments, or mere social campaigns.
Meanwhile, UMM Rector Prof. Dr. Nazaruddin Malik, M.Si., congratulated the two new professors at the White Campus. According to him, the topics chosen by both are very interesting as they discuss the SDGs from an economic aspect. Nazar stated that one of Indonesia's biggest challenges is addressing social inequality. Especially considering the number of unemployed individuals aged 15-27 years, which reaches 9.9 million.
“If not addressed, this could trigger a phenomenon of widening social inequality in the future. It could even reduce national economic and political stability,” he emphasized.
Thus, through their orations, the two UMM professors indicated that economic studies on welfare economics, which have been modified into studies and movements, must be encouraged. Ultimately, this can end social inequality. Additionally, Nazar emphasized that as a university, UMM is always expected to contribute to education and community development. The university strives to provide better education, scholarships, social assistance, and other welfare efforts.
“To date, UMM has 62 professors. Hopefully, we can achieve 80-90 new professors this year. This way, the White Campus can dedicate itself to providing more responsive and quality educational services, solely for the sake of devotion to Allah SWT,” he concluded. (wil)
