University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) successfully launched a book entitled Sharia and Human Rights on Saturday (16/7). The book, the result of decades of research, contains writings from experts from various parts of the world. Starting from Indonesia, Norway, Malaysia, and a series of others.

Lena Larsen from the University of Oslo, Norway, said that this book is the culmination of a research project on the harmony and dissonance between two systems in the realm of morals, law and world politics. Namely Sharia or Islamic law and human rights.

Lena, who also contributed writings to Mizan's printed book, considered that this work could be the foundation and basis for teaching materials. Not only limited to UMM and Indonesia but also across national borders.

"I feel pleased in the process of writing until it finally becomes a book. When I uploaded a photo of this book, many friends and researchers from Malaysia to the UK were interested in getting it. Moreover, later there will be a digital copy that will make it easier for people to get it," he added.

Also attending the launch was Nelly Van Door-Harder from Wake Forest University USA and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He considered the contents of the book fascinating, even though some of the content was similar to what he taught at university. According to him, so far, many have considered Sharia a complicated thing even though they have not studied it.

Thus, this book is one way for the public to understand Sharia and human rights better. Nelly, as she is known, emphasized that this book is not only for Muslims. But it can also be read and studied by non-Muslims so that they can understand each other and minimize misunderstandings.

"After reading this book, we can know more about Sharia and Human Rights. That way, we can create harmony in today's society," she said.

Meanwhile, Vice Rector I of UMM, Prof. Dr. Syamsul Arifin, M.Sc. happy because after a long time of not being able to collaborate directly due to Covid, now UMM can invite experts and launch the book. He said that before the pandemic, UMM White Campus routinely held agendas that studied human rights and sharia. The last one was at the end of 2019.

"Of course, we are happy to be able to discuss again and launch a book that has been the result of an 11-year project. Hopefully, we can collaborate on other programs and projects in the future," he concluded. (cdr/wil)
