Generally, the learning process at the campus is done in a classroom — including the process of material writing explained by a lecturer. However, the activity is not done by the vocational students of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) vocational students, located at Jl. Raya Ngijo, Karangploso Districrt, Malang Regency. If seen, this campus seems to be an industry or a company with complete workers.

The Director of the Directorate of UMM Vocational Education and Training, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tulus Winarsunu, M.Si, says that this vocational campus indeed applies the learning concept Factory Training and Production Collaboration project. The learning process, on the other hand, is called authentic learning.

"To support the real situation, then the vocational program of UMM encourages industrial partnerships to engage in the campus to collaborate with our students directly. So that practicians invited not only serves as a guest lecturer or funder, but also seriously teaches them how an industry runs," explains Tulus.

Furthermore, he explains the teaching factory principle implemented by UMM, where students are not only involved in research but also in producing goods until marketing is done with company partners. "This concept can be called as gain-gain solution. Where each party, both from the company and the campus, can gain profits," says Tulus.

The students of the UMM Vocational Program also acquire multidimensional skills, which means they simultaneously obtain hard and soft skills in their respective scientific areas. In Tulus' opinion, soft skills are still and will always be needed in the industrial processes in this modern era.

"As we know, soft skill is the competence to communicate well, think critically and creatively, as well. So that goods produced by students will be new innovative products that are adapted to technological developments," says Tulus.

The point is the learning process done by the UMM Vocational Program aims to generate excellent human resources which can benefit society and the nation too. "So, the vocational program of UMM has established much industrial cooperation, both domestically or internationally —  opening training programs which can facilitate students to pursue their career globally," explains Tulus.

Last but not least, Tulus also says that the curriculum applied in the vocational program of UMM in the future will be flexible based on the needs of the times. Therefore, the vocational program will not waste time in the normal learning process.

"Because eventually, we will not recognize what criteria of graduates will be selected and accepted by companies. Even though they will not pursue their career in a company, the graduates of UMM vocational program, at least, have qualified provisions to start their own business," ends Tulus. (imh/zak/wil)
