University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) is expanding its cooperation with the Japanese company OS Selnajaya. This was proven by signing the collaboration at the "Career Opportunity Seminar in Japan in the Construction Sector," held by UMM Vocational Schools on February 25, 2023. The activity, which was held in a hybrid manner, was attended by hundreds of participants, lecturers, students, and Vocational High School students.
On that occasion, the Japan Association for Human Resources Project Leader, Shikano Naoya, explained the Specified Skill Worker (SSW) system in Japan. He explained that as of June 2022, the total Indonesian population in Japan was 83,169 people, where 47% or 39,177 Indonesians in Japan are interns and 11% or 9,481 people as SSWs.
"This system was created to help with the problem of a lack of human resources (HR) in Japan. They targeted workers with the ability, experience, and sufficient knowledge in their respective fields. As for workers as SSWs, they have their residence status," explained Shikano.
Furthermore, Shikano explained that since April 2019, SSW had been divided into two residence statuses, 1 and 2. The difference is that residence number 2 is a worker with better abilities than number 1. They can also extend their stay period and bring their families to Japan.
"SSW in the construction sector is divided into three types: civil engineering, architecture, utilities, and facilities. SSW gets an average salary of around 230,000 yen, the same as 26 million monthly rupiahs. However, to become an SSW, workers must pass the JFT level A2 Japanese language test (Japan Foundation Test) and the number 1 SSW exam," explained Shikano.
The other representatives from the Japanese construction association were also present as speakers at the seminar. They were Takaishi Tsune, who explained formwork in construction. Nakamura Shinya explained steel reinforcement, and Kitaguchi Nobuo explained gas pressure welding in construction.
On that occasion, the President Director of OS Selnajaya Jakarta, Satoshi Miyajima, was also present and said that the purpose of this seminar was to increase opportunities for cooperation in Indonesia, especially with UMM. In this case, the Japan Association Construction for Human Resources (JAC) entrusted UMM as a partner in SSW's training and selection process.
"I hope JAC's arrival can increase Indonesian job opportunities to work in Japan. So the main goal of SSW can be achieved optimally," Satoshi hoped.
On the other hand, the Directorate of Vocational Education and Training of UMM, Dr. Tulus Winarsunu, M.Sc, consider this collaboration to develop a pre-existing scheme. So far, there have been 29 Japanese companies that have collaborated with the UMM Vocational School. "Through this collaboration, the UMM Vocational School wants to change the views of Indonesians about working abroad. They can compete with other human resources if they have strong determination and study well. So that they can become official and legal professionals," said Tulus. (put/zak/wil)
