Wiwin's Crocheted Creations: Bags (Photo: Special) |
Recently, the skill of crocheting has gained popularity among the public. Many have taken up learning for crocheting to fill the leisure time or start a business. Wient Ramadhani, a student from the Industrial Engineering program at Muhammadiyah University of Malang (UMM), shares this sentiment. Presently, she conducts various engaging workshops, including crochet workshops.
Wiwin, as she's fondly called, has been involved in crocheting since the outbreak of Covid-19 in 2020. Initially, she admitted feeling bored and confused about what to do due to government-imposed restrictions on movement (PPKM). "Since I couldn't go anywhere and classes were online, I gradually felt bored and wanted to find a new hobby aside from reading," she said.
Armed with this, she began exploring a new hobby to fill her free time by self-learning crochet through online resources. From there, she successfully collaborated with event organizers to initiate a workshop titled "Spotted Chunky Knit Bag," a hit among the public. Up to now, besides making profits, this new hobby has also provided numerous benefits, especially for the general public interested in learning crochet with her.

At a young age, she organized 12 crochet workshops for making bags in various regions. Her workshops have travelled as far as Surabaya and are not limited to Malang and its vicinity. Besides crafting bags, she enjoys crocheting trinkets like keychains, dolls, and more.
"The first time I gave instructions and practical sessions, I felt somewhat nervous. Crocheting, especially, is quite challenging and can't be taught within just two hours. That's why I limit the number of participants to only 10 to 15 per workshop," she added.
Through these workshops, many opportunities have emerged. From earning extra pocket money, gaining self-confidence, to building relationships among participants. Thanks to her crochet hobby, she established a homemade crochet production available on commercial platforms. Not just for herself, these workshops also create opportunities for participants to explore new job prospects.

Hence, she continues to innovate to expand the reach of her workshops nationally. She also plans to develop workshops beyond crocheting bags, a venture she's currently involved in. However, this won't be easy as it requires multiple learning attempts before entering new workshop classes. Moreover, she must consider the enthusiasm of the participants.
The owner of the Instagram account @ini.rajutanku advises young people to keep trying and not be afraid of failure. "There's no harm in trying, even if progress is slow. Just because we're young and students doesn't mean we can't innovate. Don't forget to pursue education. There should be a balance between hobbies, work, and studies. Hopefully, our efforts can bring many benefits for ourselves and society," she concluded. (Tri/Wil/Fajr)
