Every layer of society has a role in achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This was directly conveyed by Speaker Dr. Tatag Muttaqin, S.Hut., M.Sc. at the Youth SDGs Conference organized by the UMM SDGs Student Activity Unit on July 1. The event was attended by student representatives from 30 campuses across Indonesia and several from abroad, such as Ghana and Afghanistan. They are young people concerned about SDG issues.

Furthermore, Tatag explained that SDG issues must be addressed by all layers of society. This can create a stable life ecosystem. Humans, as living beings, are interconnected with other living beings, including humans, animals, plants, and the environment.

"For example, discussions on environmental issues, particularly solid, liquid, and gas waste. All waste is produced by society, industry, and others. Therefore, they must also address it because it directly impacts climate deterioration. Not to mention other aspects," he emphasized.

According to him, the climate impact caused by environmental pollution activities can directly cause an increase in air temperature. The effects include abnormal fluctuations in the food sector, water availability, animal ecosystems, weather, and the risk of large and sudden climate changes.

"Air temperature rises, automatically reducing farmers' harvest yields. Some areas will experience drought, and the most dangerous is the rise in sea levels. Several animal species will experience mass deaths, unpredictable weather, and climate changes that do not follow periodic patterns. These sectors are highly interconnected, so they must be maintained together," he explained.

On the other hand, Sandi Wahyudiono, ST., MT., the advisor of UMM SDGs, revealed that this activity is a form of UMM's real commitment to supporting SDGs. Additionally, UMM often makes innovations and real breakthroughs to contribute directly to the success of the SDGs.

"There are still few campuses in Indonesia focusing on achieving SDGs. Meanwhile, UMM has directly engaged in activities such as tree planting, subak development, and water use for energy. These are strongly related to environmental issues. There are also street schools directly related to social issues and various other activities. This event also aims to produce a generation that will participate in achieving the SDGs," he explained.

Finally, Sandi, as he is familiarly called, hopes that the participants can become pioneers and drivers to mobilize society to achieve the SDGs. According to him, young people who are critical in expressing ideas are highly needed, especially on issues related to the welfare of humanity in the future. (Faq/Wil/Fajr)
