Syria Opposition Forms Counter Government

VIVAnews - Various opposition faction opponents of the regime Bashar al-Assad in Syria decides aside differences and unite to form a government in exile. This latest move is expected to encourage countries to the West and Arab support their struggle to overthrow Assad.

Reported by Reuters, the decision was taken at a meeting of the opposition in Doha, Qatar, on Sunday, November 11, 2012. The meeting was attended by the opposition stronghold of rebel fighters, veterans, and ethnic and religious minorities.

They agreed to unite and form a government alone. In conclusion, a moderate cleric origin Damascus, Mouas al-Khatib, was elected president. Also selected two vice presidents is Riad Seif and Suhair Atassi, and secretary-general Mustafa al-Sabagh.

Khatib is a cleric who was a priest in the Umayyad mosque in Damascus. As president of the exile government of Syria, he called on the Syrian army to defect and all sects to unite.

"We are calling for independence for every Sunni, Alawi, Ismaili (Shia), Christians and Druze. Fulfillment We are also calling all the rights of the Syrian people to live in harmony," said Khatib.

The establishment of a rival government is getting support from various parties. One is from the Prime Minister of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim. "We will fight to create a new government was recognized by all parties, as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people," said Jassim.

The U.S. government also expressed its support for the unity of opposition groups. Meanwhile, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmed Davutoglu said that now no excuse for countries not to support Syria.

Meanwhile, violence continued in Syria. Activist groups estimate the death toll since the Syrian Revolution broke out last year had more than 30,000 people, mostly women and children.
