Dean of FIKES UMM: Laying Around Causes Obesity to Bone Disorders

Living in an era of instant and easy advancements, it is common for modern society to enjoy laying around. Moreover, the presence of gadgets can minimize a person's physical activity. Despite their comfort, laying around habits have adverse effects. Dr. Yoyok Bekti Prasetyo, M.Kep., Sp.Kom., a lecturer at the Faculty of Health Sciences (FIKES) at Muhammadiyah University of Malang (UMM), conveyed the dangers of this habit.
 
"The issue of laying around and its hazardous effects has become a community nursing concern, so we must not ignore it," began Yoyok.

He pointed out that people often overlook the temporary discomfort of extended laying around. However, this can be very dangerous for health, potentially triggering various chronic diseases later in life.

"Some of these include muscle and joint pain, heart disease, kidney failure, stroke, cancer, and obesity," Yoyok exemplified.

In addition to laying around, irregular or excessive sleeping can significantly contribute to weight gain. This can potentially elevate blood sugar levels, leading to diabetes.

"When laying around, certain parts of the body experience significant pressure, which can cause changes in bone structure, bone displacement, fractures, and bone disorders like scoliosis, kyphosis, and lordosis," explained the FIKES UMM Dean.

A person might experience dizziness not only while laying around, but also when getting up from a laying around position. This is due to rapid changes in blood pressure, known as orthostatic hypotension. This condition arises from low blood pressure caused by rapid changes in body position. Orthostatic hypotension is generally a symptom of certain diseases, like heart disorders and nerve-related illnesses. Therefore, Yoyok advised people, especially young people, to avoid this habit and increase their physical activity. 

"Avoid prolonged laying around. Incorporate physical activities like walking and light exercises into daily routines. Also, steer clear of fast food and adopt a healthy lifestyle for a better quality of life," he concluded. (nda/wil/fajr)
