The ease of online food delivery - including discounts - from any restaurant enables people to taste desired foods and beverages, like boba drinks, milk coffee, fast food, sweet bread, and modern cake. The phenomenon has eventually garnered the attention of Ns. Zaqqi Ubaidillah, M.Kep., Sp.Kep. MB., the Nursing Lecturer of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang.

In his view, sweet foods and beverages routinely consumed in the long term can cause obesity and lead to diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic and severe disease due to the pancreas' inability to produce or use insulin efficiently. At the same time, the hormone is crucial as it regulates blood sugar levels inside the body.

On the other hand, the risk of diabetes can increase because drinks with high glucose can increase free radicals inside the body. Besides, sweet beverages can cause glucose toxicity, harming pancreatic beta cells; meanwhile, they are essential in secreting insulin.

"In addition to causing diabetes, foods or beverages with high sugar can harm vascular endothelium, which can cause atherosclerosis, the blockage of blood vessels," says the specialist of UMM medical surgical

The man known as Zaqi explains that the potency to suffer diabetes is now growing. According to research from the International Diabetes Federation, it is predicted that by 2030, Indonesia will be in the sixth rank of people with diabetes.

According to him, consuming modern drinks is unhealthy, notably when it is followed by consuming high-calorie food, like fried rice, fried noodles, Indonesian coconut rice, Padang rice, fast food, and other preservative food. It does not rule out the possibility that adding flavors and toppings to food and beverages can lead to diabetes.

"It is not only boba drink and coffee. Various packaged drinks, including other carbonated drinks and juices, contain high sugar content. It is even more than the maximum daily requirement of adults," he emphasizes.

Despite the condition, it does not mean people are prohibited from consuming their favorite foods and beverages. As long as the habit is not routine and they can limit high-calorie food consumption, Zaqi says it is permissible to taste modern foods with suitable consumption conditions.

He also encourages people to understand the existing content in various foods and drinks, like reading the nutritional content of the seal of packaged food and beverages. Hence, people can control which food can be routinely consumed and limited.

"People should consume fruits and vegetables, so should drinks with 0 calories like mineral water, tea and coffee without sugar," ends the Lecturer. (sep/wil)
