Doing Fitness and Gym without a Personal Trainer's Assistance? This Is the Response of A UMM Lecturer

Fitness and gym sports have become excellent sports lately. Besides being beneficial for health, this one sport is in great demand because it provides significant results in shaping the body. For beginners, it is usually recommended to use a Personal Trainer (PT) for initial training.

Unfortunately, the high price for PT assistance makes many people finally choose to do their fitness. Head of Physiotherapy Study Program, University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) Dimas Sondang Irawan, SST.Ft., M.Fis., Ph.D. says this is not recommended. Fitness and gyms do require trainers to reduce the possibility of injury.

The fitness and gym are different. The gym exercises using weights, while fitness is more on fitness that can be done without weights. Even though there are significant differences between the two terms, it still requires PT, especially for beginners.

"Personal trainers here can help to provide an understanding of the benefits and goals, the dose of exercise and the risk of possible injury. Even with initial treatment if you get injured at any time, "he explained.

Onrisk of injuries for fitness and gym beginners without PT has delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). Namely the appearance of pain after doing exercise. This usually occurs 12-24 hours after exercise. The risk of injury is prone because of a lack of knowledge about repetition and loads according to ability limits. Moreover, beginners usually can't wait to be able to get the ideal body until they finally force themselves immediately.

"Fitness can actually be done by anyone at any age. Even better has been done since childhood. As we know, children are now attached to technology which reduces their physical activity drastically," said Dimas.

The same thing also happened to adults. Many people feel they have enough exercise because of their high physical activity. Unfortunately, this perception is incorrect because the human body requires straightforward maintenance, and fitness provides it well.

"A little message for health workers and health students. Our job is to provide education to the public regarding what is wrong and what is right in health. So that misunderstandings don't happen and they are aware to maintain their body fitness, "he concluded. (imh/nia/wil)
