The Government of East Nusa Tenggara Province has implemented a regulation for senior high school students to go to school at 05.00 WITA. The Governor of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) said that the rules enacted since the end of February were considered to have many positive things for students. This is also part of the effort to improve human resources (HR) in NTT.
This occurrence caught the attention of Prof. H. Akhsanul In'am, Ph.D., a lecturer in the Mathematics Education Study Program at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). According to him, the policy is good but not right. He said that most NTT people are non-Muslims, and some are not used to getting up at dawn like Muslims. This habit will be difficult to change in a relatively short time.
"If this applied to a Muslim, it might not be a problem, yes. But in NTT there are also many non-Muslims, so I think tolerance must also be considered," he said.
In'am assesses that this policy can also harm students. Since the situation was still bleak, accidents were undoubtedly more likely to occur. On the range of 05.00–05.30 WITA, many students still have difficulty getting public transportation to school, so this policy will not be very effective. Ideally, lessons can start at 6:30 in the morning because, at that time, students are ready to receive new knowledge, and the sky is already bright.
However, if you still want to enter at 05:30 WITA, In'am believes that the provincial government needs to impose a curfew. So that students do not wander around in cafes and can wake up in the morning.
Furthermore, building dormitories for students can also be an essential solution so that the students will be safer, more orderly, and able to follow the regulations that have been applied. "If the entry policy at 05.30 WITA is accompanied by a dormitory, I think it will be able to run more effectively and better," he said.
However, according to him, many other solutions can be taken if you want to improve and produce quality human resources. Some of them are by maximizing the potential of each student with various programs, giving more attention, and showing high appreciation for those who achieve. Students will be more enthusiastic about learning by providing scholarships and more qualified facilities.
"In several countries, students are given good facilities so they are able to maximize their potential. Either those who are good at academics or non-academic. This certainly makes it easier for them to work and fosters enthusiasm for learning," he concluded. (put/dev/wil)
