The Indonesian Language and Literature Education at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) ensures its students gain extra skills by equipping them comprehensively. Through the Independent-Learning Independent Campus program [Trans.: Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM)], they are taught non-academic skills that add value and competence. Even due to the program, hundreds of students successfully graduate without a thesis.
"So we provide three programs, starting from student exchange, internship, and school teaching assistant," said Arif Setiawan, S.Pd., M.Pd., the Head of the Study Program.
In the student exchange program, Arif notes that students can choose any universities, which allow them to immerse in different campus atmosphere with special challenges and experiences. Meanwhile, in the internship program, UMM's Indonesian Language and Literature Education department has collaborated with several related agencies, institutions, and companies, including publishing industries, since the concept is out of teaching.
"The concept of the internship is outside of teaching. Therefore, students are taught about entrepreneurship; for example, through the Book Entrepenur Class of the Center of Excellence (CoE), which collaborates with a publishing company. Meanwhile, the teaching assistant program is more focused on strengthening the graduates' profiles as teachers," said Arief.
He also explained that the implementation of the MBKM program is considered to help students. Besides getting knowledge and experience outside their home university, they can complete their undergraduate thesis correctly and quickly.

"The opportunities of the MBKM program provided by the Indonesian Language and Literature Education can allow students to create a report. The data, then, can be converted to a thesis, so they can graduate without a thesis because it has been equivalized, which is similar to the internship program at the publishing industry, where they compile Indonesian language books based on the independent curriculum," added he.
Those activities can be converted to the 'script-preneur' project, directed to research and development. For the teaching assistant program, they can collect as much data as possible related to the case studies. From the case studies, the findings can be materials for writing academic articles to publish in the Sinta-3-indexed journal.
"In essence, students participating in the MBKM program can be ensured to be ready to take a final exam. Therefore, besides interning, they are also required to be able to present data for case studies or research and development. With these ongoing MBKM programs, hundreds of UMM Indonesian Language and Literature Education students can graduate without a thesis within one year," the Head of the Department ended. (imh/wil)
