Mathematics is a subject that is often disliked by people. Therefore, a group of students from the Mathematics Study Program at the University of Muhammmadiyah Malang (UMM) came up with an idea. They submitted two topics to participate in Idea Fest Karya Tulisan Ilmiah (Scientific Writing Idea Fest) in Yogyakarta last August and managed to win a bronze medal. Their themes were 'How to Think Rationally in Solving Mathematical Contextual Problems' and 'How to Change Students' Mindset to Love Mathematics through Games'.
The team leader, Annisa Khoirunnillah, explains to us why her group chose this topic. According to her, there are many students who think that math is very difficult to understand. It makes her team want to change that mindset. “Most children today tend be unable to escape from gadgets, digital, and games. Therefore, we made a card game that is related to math. Thus, students can learn in a fun and comfortable process while playing the cards,” she said.

In addition, they also won the most favorite video award. The video summarized the scientific papers that had been made. Although they successfully brought home achievements, Nisa also said that there were some challenges and problems. She said that the competition was held at the same time as the final exams. It makes them have to try extra hard to manage their time. Luckily, the good cooperation was able to bring them to the peak of achievement.
Furthermore, she said that this achievement could not be apart from the contribution of the UMM campus, which always accommodates and helps its students. It included preparation for the competition, lecturers, motivations, costs, and so on. She felt that UMM's full support made it easier for her team to be able to express and innovate well.

The medal is not for Nisa herself. She was accompanied by Auliya Lely, Annisa Khoirunnillah, Syafirda Azmi Aulia, and Fitrotun Nisa. “As a great future generation, I encourage other youths to prepare themselves. Preparing a more developed Indonesia and being able to achieve the Golden Indonesia 2045. There are many things we can do, including those of us who have contributed to the education sector. We will continue to do so, as well as students and other young people,” she concluded. (Zaf/Wil/Put)
