Various international speakers and cross-cultural academics participated in an Indonesian-language international seminar titled "Glocalization as an Opportunity and Challenge in Contemporary Socio-Political Contexts," organized by the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) Muhammadiyah Malang University (UMM) on November 20. Several speakers also had the opportunity to share their perspectives on how globalization impacts local contexts across various aspects, including culture, politics, and social media.
A lineup of keynote speakers shared their perspectives during the event. For instance, Mohammed Bosha from the International University of Africa discussed the importance of dispelling cultural stereotypes often associated with the African continent. He emphasized that Africa is a continent rich in cultural diversity and innovation, far beyond the narratives of conflict and crisis.
"Glocalization efforts provide an opportunity to showcase another side of Africa that is full of potential and peace. Therefore, the stereotypes often directed at us must be eliminated," he explained.
Meanwhile, Grady Ryan Mitchell from California State University San Marcos explored a comparison between the democratic systems in his country and Indonesia. He highlighted how democracy in the global era has undergone significant transformations due to the influence of media and technology. According to him, democracy in Indonesia has a unique dynamic where local and global influences intersect. This presents both challenges and opportunities to strengthen the existing political system.
Annisa R. Beta from Melbourne University also highlighted the shifts in youth identity resulting from the rise of social media. She explained how platforms like Instagram and TikTok are not only spaces for sharing but also play a significant role in shaping mindsets and behaviors, particularly among young women.
"Social media has become a space for negotiating identity in the modern era, where local cultures can shine even within a global context. This is also an opportunity we can maximize," she emphasized.
The seminar is part of FISIP UMM's annual program, initiated in 2022, aimed at fostering cross-cultural dialogue and promoting understanding of global issues. UMM's Vice Rector IV, Muhamad Salis Yuniardi, M.Psi, Ph.D., emphasized that glocalization is a phenomenon that must be approached wisely. "Glocalization is not just a challenge but also an opportunity for us to remain relevant in an ever-changing world while preserving our rich local cultures," he stated.
The event concluded with an interactive discussion session involving seminar participants to explore strategic steps in addressing glocalization. With a spirit of collaboration and inclusivity, it is hoped that this seminar will inspire academics and the public to face the challenges of the modern era. (vin/wil/ind)
