Lalapan or penyetan (traditional Indonesian food) is the favorite food of Indonesian people. Malang has become a city with hundreds of thousands of nomads and college students. Lalapan has become an inseparable part. However, how much nutrition is there, and what are its adverse effects?
Regarding this issue, a lecturer at the Faculty of Health and Science at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), Dr. Pamela Sumarauw, explained that eating fresh vegetables every day can have an adverse impact.
"Most of the menus that served at lalapan stall are foods that are processed by frying it using oil. This will bring up substances or nutrients that are not good for the health if it consumed daily," explains Pamela, her nickname.
The lalapan in Malang can not be separated from the vegetables served alongside the main dish. There are chicken, duck, lele, etc. At first glance, the food is perfectly healthy. It contains carbs from rice, protein from fish or chicken, minerals, and vitamins from vegetables. Unfortunately, some factors decrease its beneficial nutrients. It is the processing method, serving portion size, and hygiene.

"Lets take an example from the oil that have been used for frying for several times. This can occur saturated fat content or bad fat which is harmful to the health. Likewise, an excessive portion of rice will increase the sugar content. The hygiene of raw vegetables also has the potential to cause various diseases," she explains.
Pamela said food containing high fat and carbohydrates would increase calorie levels and the risk of obesity. This can also improve the potential for chronic diseases such as coronary heart disease, hypertension or high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer.

Therefore, Pamela emphasized that consuming lalapan every day is not recommended. It would be better if people reduced the portion and limited the consumption of lalapan by adding a variety of other foods that are healthier in processing, such as boiled, steamed, or grilled.
Exercise regularly for at least 150 minutes or 2-3 times a week to maintain the nutrition balance. Maintaining a sleep pattern of 7-8 hours a day and intake of vitamins and minerals that are good for the body is also recommended," she concluded. (Put/Lib/Wil)
