The new year 2023 has indeed passed. Many people commemorate it by gathering with their families to serve grilled food. However, who would have thought, food cooked with charcoal turned out to have the potential to cause cancer.

According to the Faculty of Health Sciences lecturer, University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) Faqih Ruhyanudin, M. Kep., Sp. Kep.MB, in general, charcoal is not carcinogenic. But cooking with charcoal can bring out carcinogenic properties that cause cancer. With a long enough process, cancer is formed from cells mutated due to carcinogens.

It all starts with the growth of polyps from cells that should undergo apoptosis or death. However, these cells survive and grow. Nevertheless, the lecturer who focuses on medical-surgical nursing said that until now, the cause of cancer had not been identified.

The cultural tendency of the Indonesian people to consume smoked or grilled food must be considered because it contains benzopyran compounds. Exposure to these substances can lead to increased development of cancer.

Regarding cancer detection, he explained that the chances of recovery would be high if it could be detected early or before cancer cells spread to other areas. However, even though they are declared cured, patients must remain vigilant because cancer cells still have the chance to reappear elsewhere. “Sometimes, when someone is diagnosed with cancer, the person is immediately worried and not enthusiastic. The effect of treatment is only 30%, while the rest is self-motivated to recover and overcome the disease,” explained Faqih.

In the end, Faqih conveyed some tips to start good habits and prevent this disease. Start with regular exercise or physical activity every day. Then also, avoid alcohol and obesity and pay attention to the food that enters the body. Smoking also needs to be avoided, and reduce foods made from high-fat red meat.

“Humans are unique creatures. In addition to healthy physical factors, we also need to maintain the health of our psychological and spiritual conditions for a more optimal life. Instead of celebrating something with excessive euphoric activity, it's better to introspect and improve yourself. Both in terms of physical, psychological, and spiritual, "he concluded.
