Laboraoty of Chemistry

Laboratory of Chemistry which covers Laboratory of Basic Chemistry, Anorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Biochemistry is a facility for education, research, service, and quality control. By those four functions, it is clear that the xistance of Laboratory of Chemistry in Higher Education (PT) is very essential especially for university which has faculty of exact science. It is to support the implementation of Tri Dharma of Higher Education that covers education, research, and service the community.

Chemistry is a science which based on experiment so that the relation between theory and practice is very close.

The objectives of chemistry practice are:

  1. As the illustration of the principles on the theory,
  2. As the forming of scientific attitude,
  3. As the skill development so that the practitioners are able and skilled in operating the tools, handling chemical substances, teaching practices and measuring chemistry,
  4. To get practical experience as the basic of conducting further research in accordance with the background of each expertise.

Therefore, in addition to be the place for chemistry practice for students, this laboratory also functions as the place for conducting research, both the students' research and the lecturers' research, and as the public service for people arround university, either for education, quality control, or other necessities.

The equipment in Laboratory of Chemistry UMM is still oriented on the practice service and for basic research. Moreover, it still needs to be improve and developed. The facilities (tools and materials) can be seen directly in the laboratory, considering that the lots of equipments that cannot be stated here.

Currently, the use of Laboratory is still limited on: a) Students' research both for public need and for final assignment need, b) Lecturers' research, and c) public service, for certain test that can be done in Laboratory of Chemistry for example water quality test, etc.

Laboratory of Chemistry is used by 4 faculties: Faperta, Fapet, FKIP, and Faculty of Engineering. The developing of this laboratory is difficult because each faculty has their own interest, specification, and the direction of development. Besides, there is no department of chemistry which is one of other difficulties.

Generally, for the short term this laboratory:
  1. Able to fulfill the practices from the four faculties with broader experiment variation and has high suitability with the theory in lecturing and able to fulfill the demand of undergraduate profession in every faculty, and
  2. Able to fulfill the need for broader basic research both for students' research and lecturers' research.

Meanwhile, in the long term, this laboratory is expected to be able to fulfill the need of further research, can function as analysis service either for internal campus or for public, and also to test the quality of industrial products and etc.
