Biotechnology Development Center
A. Introduction
Biotechnology basically is a scientific principles and technology using biological agents to produce goods and services. Thoughts for biotechnology development stand on the expectation that the technology would be useful to solve various problems such as food shortages, the decline of food quality, population density, pests, deseases, pollution, degraded land, generic erosion, and extinction of biological resources. With a wide range of backgrounds on economic, social, culture, politics, and education fields as well as the urgency on human resource development, Muhammadiyah through Higher Education Council of Muhammadiyah on August 1991 established seven study centers of science and technology.
Potency and credibility of the University of as Muhammadiyah Malang in performing education, research, community service, and campus development resulted on the trust from the Higher Education Council of Muhammadiyah to be one of study centers for science and technology, that is as Biotechnology Development Center/Pusat Pengembangan Bioteknologi (PUSBANG BIOTEK), with Rector's Decree of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang No. E.2/2363/UMM/XI/1991 followed by Decree No. 25/SK-Pem/XII/2005. The establishment of Biotechnology Development Center is supported by the sufficient human resources from several faculties at UMM such as FTTE (Biology), Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Medical Faculty, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Nursing, and Nursing Academi.
Along with the rapid and competitive development of science and technology recently, an educational institution is required to be able preparing skillful graduates. The existence of Pusbang Biotek is expected to be able adding value on the quality of graduates from the Muhammadiyah Universities (PTM) in general and University of Muhammadiyah Malang in particular, from the related faculties.
B. Objectives and Target
1. Objectives
a. As a means for researches, developments, and applications of biotechnology. Therefore, the activities of research, community service, and production become the major priority.
b. As a means for the improvement efforts of the quality of human resource. Therefore, the educational and training activities become one of the priorities.
2. Target
a. In general: To give devotion to the publics from Persyarikatan Muhammadiyah, especially University of Muhammadiyah Malang.
b. In particular:
1) Providing facilities for the academic community of Muhammadiyah University (PTM) to actively participate in developing and improving science and technology, especially biotechnology.
2) Socializing understanding, mastering, and applicating technology packages can give addition values to the production process of agricultural field in general and environmental improvement.
C. Operational Program
Research
Reasearch activity conducted at Pusbang Biotek among others are directed to the following objectives: productivity improvement in the field of biotechnology in general, production quality improvement, efforts in guaranting production, utilization of farm waste, and implementaion of energy-saved agricultural business which has sustainable nuance and enviromentally supported. The research process is expected to generate science and technology which can solve the real problems in a society recently and in the future. Thus, it would be able to donate for the development of biotechnology in general.
Education and Training
In order to improve the quality of academic community resource from Muhammadiyah University (PTM) in particular and publics in general, education and training become one of the priorities of Pusbang Biotek programs.
Community Service
The activity is gradually and continuously organized in order to introduce and socialize various technology generated from the research and training at Pusbang Biotek. Besides, to improve teh quality of research and training, community service is one of feedback process from the publics. Therefore, there will be efforts in solving problems which exist in the society directionally adn integrally using scientific approach.
