Language Center

Direction and Objective:

In order to improve academic life at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang, English Language Center (Lembaga Pengembangan Bahasa) is required to have an optimal role in developing language proficiency of the academic community.

The language development at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang has three long directions:

a.    As a means of culture, science, and technology transportations.

b.    As a means of improvement on international cooperation, and

c.    As a means of increasing strategy and competence in global competitiveness.

 

In addition, English for Spesific Purpose program is an English program specialized for each discipline in all departments and faculties at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The program is intended for all new students of semester I to II in order to give them English based on their disciplines.

          The ESP program is OBLIGATORY for all new students and transfer students. It is referrred to the Rector's Decree No. E.6.1/239/BAA/III/2007 which is revised form of Rector's Decree No. E.6.1/027/BAA-UMM/I/2004, No. E.1.a/612/UMM/VI/2001, and No. E.2.d/508/UMM/VIII/1999 on Principal Provisions of ESP at UMM.

          On the Principal Provisions, it is mentioned that:

1.      The ESP program must be taken by all new and transfer students at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang based on the Rector's Decree No. E.2.d/588/UMM/VIII/1999 dated August 3, 1999

2.      Since the academic year of 2008/2009,  ESP program is held for two semesters with the details as follow*):

a. Semester I      : Reading I     (2 credits)

                          Speaking I   (2 credits)

                          Listening      (2 credits)

b. Semester II     : Reading II    (2 credits

                          Speaking II  (2 credits)

                          Writing        (2 credits)

*) For particular departments or study programs, ESP is organized based on the coordination between Language Center and Vice Rector I.

3.      Students who cannot participate ESP on the determined semesters (semester 1 and 2) with approved reasons must have a written permission to the Chief of Language Center and recognized by Chief of Department at least 2 (two) weeks after official schedule is released.

4.      Student who cannot participate lecture as in point 3, but they have paid for ESP program for the particular semester, the payment can be diverted for the next semester by showing the original receipt and a written permission signed by the Chief of Language Center and the Chief of Department.

5.      Students who do not know the provision of point 3 are disqualified to get ESP service and all the things related to the program. The students must program the ESP with the new payment based on the univerity provision.

6.      Students who have passed the ESP will obtainn ESP certificate and transcript which are equal to Diploma I of English.

Those who have passed the program are eligible to participate in ESP GRADUATION if:

·         Achieving GPT for at least 2.00

·         There is no D or E score.

·         Fulfilling all the requirements.

7.      GPA (Grade Point Avarage) on the ESP transcript can be transferred to the English score on the KHS programmed at each department in the end of semester I and II using criteria below:

a.      GPA 2.00 is converted into C

b.      GPA 2.01 – 2,50 is converted into C+

c.      GPA 2.51 – 3,00 is converted into B

d.      GPA 3.01 – 3,50 is converted into B+

e.      GPA 3.51 – 4,00 is converted into A

8.      Certificate showing that the student has graduated from ESP program is one of the prerequisite for joining Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) and thesis examination.

9.      Students who get D Score (point 6) MUST retake the program using the newest payment regulation of ESP.

10.  To retake the failed subjects (D or E scores), students are charged according to regulations at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang.

11.  All the payments related to ESP program only can be done through pointed BNI or BCA bank. The payment receipt must be kept.

Related to the point 9 and 10 from the principal provisions, students who FAILED on EPS program must retake the remedy class. The regulations are on the charge of Language Center. Meanwhile, the remedy is in the form of SPECIAL CLASS and SHORT SEMESTER.

 

REGISTRATION FOR REMIDY CLASS

          Remedy class (Special Class and Short Semester) are organized for all student who failed ESP on the previous semester. The registration of remedy class is announced to all the faculties every the end of the semester.

 

STANDARD TEST

          To measure the student's English competence, the Lenguage  Center organizes Standard Test for 3 periods, namely:

  1. Standard Test I must be taken by all new students in every beginning of an adacemic year. The test is aimed to know the initial competence of new students before getting ESP lectures.
  2. Standard Test II must be taken by all students of ESP judicium participants. It is held in every the end of even semester before ESP graduation. The test is aimed to know how far the students master the ESP subjects which have been given.
  3. Standard Test III must be taken by all graduate candidates which is held before university graduation. The test is aimed to know the improvement on student's competence in English after they get ESP lectures.

 

ESP GRADUATION

          The ESP Graduation is a program organized by Language Center which is aimed to appreciate all the wtudents who have taken the ESP program. Besides, the program is also used for distributing ESP certificate and academic transcript to all the ESP graduates.
